Middlesbrough near relegation

With one round remaining Middlesbrough and Afonso Alves are on the brink of relegation.

“We have the faintest hope of staying in the league,” Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said after the 1-1 draw at home against Aston Villa.

Middlesbrough are three points behind Hull and safety before playing West Ham away next weekend. Middlesbrough needs to win with two goals. At the same time Manchester United has to beat Hull by three goals.

Afonso Alves won’t be taking part in the West Ham game as he suffers from a broken bone in his foot. Four other players are on the injury list plus England winger Stewart Downing is doubtful for the match.

The last time Middlesbrough was relegated from the Premier League happened in 1997, but the club won promotion the year after.
