Formed in 1876, Middlesbrough are based in the north-east of England. Since 1995, they have played at the 35,100 capacity Riverside Stadium, after moving from their old Ayresome Park ground. In 1997, they reached both the FA Cup and League Cup finals, but finished as runners-up in each competition. They had to wait until 2004 for their first major silverware, defeating Bolton Wanderers to win the League Cup. In 2006, their continued progress was underlined when they reached the Uefa Cup final, but were defeated 4-0 by Sevilla. The club's highest league finish to date was third in the 1913-14 season and have only spent two seasons outside of the Football League’s top two divisions. They are currently managed by former club captain and ex-England international Gareth Southgate. Their main rivals are fellow north-east clubs, Newcastle United and Sunderland.

SC Heerenveen, who hail from Friesland in northern Holland, was founded on 20 July 1920. The club’s stadium, the Abe Lenstra Stadion, has a capacity of 26,600 fans. In recent years they have been regulars in the Uefa Cup and, outside Holland’s top three of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord. Their best ever finish in the Dutch league came in the 1999/2000 season when they clinched runners-up spot and qualified for the Champions League.

Malmö FF hail from the city of the same name, the third largest in Sweden . The club was founded on 24 February 1910. Together with IFK Gotebörg and AIK, they are regarded as one of Sweden’s biggest three clubs, with 42 national league titles between them. Malmö themselves have won the Allsvenskan title 15 times, to go with 14 Swedish Cup victories. They also reached the European Cup final in 1979, losing out to England’s Nottingham Forest.

Örgryte IS hail from Gothenberg on the west coast of Sweden. The club was founded on 4 December 4 1887 and is known locally as Sällskapet, which means ‘The Society’. Örgryte have won 12 national league titles as well as one Swedish Cup (in 2000). They currently compete in Sweden’s top division, the Allsvenskan.

Clube Atlético Mineiro, which is due to celebrate its centenary in 2008, hail from Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, were winners of the maiden Brazilian Championship in 1971. They have also won the Conmebol Cup (the competition which was latterly replaced by the South American Cup) in 1992 and 1997, as well as the Brazilian Champions Tournament (contested by winners of the country’s various state championships) on two occasions, first in 1937 – the first time that the competition took place - and then in 1978. They have also won the Minas Gerais state championship on 39 occasions.
