Afonso Alves had to leave Monday’s match against Newcastle with a broken foot. His season is now over.
Afonso Alves’ season is over after manager Gareth Southgate this afternoon confirmed the striker fractured a metatarsal in his foot.
“He will take no further part in this season’s campaign after scans this morning revealed the extent of the injury,” says Garteh Southgate.
The Brazilian striker had to be carried of the pitch on a stretcher after 36 minutes as he became the victim of a harsh tackle from Newcastle’s Nicky Butt.
Middlesbrough lost the relegation battle at St. James Park in Newcastle 1-3. Middlesbrough took the lead through an own goal after just three minutes, but wasn’t able to hold on to the three points. Steven Taylor quickly equalised and Newcastle won the match thanks to goals from Obafemi Martins and Peter Loevenkrands in the last 20 minutes.
With two matches left Middlesbrough are still three points away from safety and needs to beat Aston Villa at home on Saturday and West Ham away the week after to secure another season in the Premier League.
